New Delhi Dec 14: December 15 is the last day to use Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in the country. Until then, the notes will be accepted at medical shops, petrol, diesel and gas outlets of state-run companies. After the mid-night of December 15,  the notes will not be accepted for paying any utility bills.
The old note will be accepted for the other utility bill payments, at railway ticketing counters and at counters of government or public sector undertaking buses for purchase of bus tickets till December 15. However, the supply of LPG, or cooking gas continues to be in the exempted category for the purpose of payment through old Rs 500 bank notes. Post the deadline, old Rs 500 notes have to be deposited in Banks only. 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 banned use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in an assault against black money, corruption and fake currency and introduced new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes. People holding notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 were allowed to deposit the same in their bank and post office accounts from November 10 till December 30. Reportedly, there were 6.7 billion pieces of Rs 1000 notes in circulation and 16.5 billion pieces of Rs 500. People who are not able to deposit their old Rs 500 or Rs 1000 notes by December 30, 2016, for whatever reason it may concern, they can go to specified offices of the RBI up to March 31, 2017 and deposit the notes after submitting a declaration form. However, all notes in lower denomination of Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, Rs 10, Rs 5, Rs 2 and Re 1 and all coins continue to remain valid.
