New Delhi: The Central Government, after a data released by the All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has closed more than 100 engineering colleges across the nation with majority of them based in Maharashtra. An autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resource Development, the AICTE has a large number of engineering colleges under its supervision. A recent data released by AICTE had a list of around 122 colleges spread across the nation that were shut down during the year 2016-2017. These institutes will not be allowed to take any new admissions henceforth. With various engineering colleges rising day after day in the country, the government has become more strict with the norms. Any college that does not adhere to the norms will be shut down.  The last four years has witnessed an increase in the number of colleges being closed with only 72 in 2012-2013 to 122 in 2016-2017. Sources in the ministry also noted that the private engineering colleges that charged hefty fee were promoted under the previous government. As per AICTE's report data, while the number of students enrolling in the colleges is increasing, only 28 per cent get placement. Hence, the government is now focusing on developing skills and making students more employable.
