DEPARTMENTAL ENQUIRIES AND INVESTIGATIONS

 DELIVERY OF DAMAGED REGISTERED ARTICLE OF LETTER MAIL AND PARCEL MAIL

When a registered article is received in the office of delivery in a damaged condition a notice will be sent to the addressee requesting him to attend the post once within 7 days in case of Inland article and 15 days for foreign articles, to take delivery.

 DELIVERY OF INSURED ARTICLES

As insured article for any sum not exceeding Rs. 500/- will be delivered in the ordinary manner. Insured articles for more than Rs. 500/- will be delivered at the P.O. window intimation of arrival being sent by post to the addressee.

 DELIVERY OF V.P. ARTICLES

If the amount to be recovered on a VP article exceeds Rs. 500/-, an intimation of its arrival will be sent by the office of destination to the addressee. Such article will be delivered at the Post Office on payment of the amount entered in the intimation.

If the amount to be recovered on a VP articles does not exceed Rs. 500/- the article will be delivered to the addressee by the postman at the addressee’s residence on payment of the amount recoverable. (R 7.20 of P.O. Guide)

 DELIVERY OF ARTICLES ON WHICH CUSTOM DUTY IS DUE

Article on which customs duty to be recovered is in excess of Rs. 50/- are ordinarily delivered at the P.O. counter/window except in presidency or first class HO where the limit is fixed as Rs. 100/- (R 44 of P.O. Guide, old)

  IDENTIFICATION CARDS

The card will be obtainable on payment of Rs. 9/- at any HO by literate persons whose identity is well established in the locality. It is valid for 3 years.

 REDIRECTION FEE ON PARCELS

A parcel redirected to any place served by the Inland post will be chargeable in respect of each redirection with further postage amounting to half the prepaid rate. Such redirection is not undertaken unless the addressee or his agent gives in writing instructions in the matter.

No redirection fee will be charged on parcels (Inland) addressed to troops and such parcels where redirected within India will be transmitted free of any charge.

PERIOD OF DETENTION OF UNDELIVERABLE ARTICLE IN P O

1.        Articles the addressee of which are not known or have left the station without intimation - Kept in deposit for 7 days

2.        Undelivered packets of Regd. Newspaper - Kept in deposit for 7 days returned thereafter to sender

 INFORMATION NOT TO BE MADE PUBLIC:

No person not belonging to the Department may be permitted to examine any article passing through the post, even though the article may have been posted by him; nor any information respecting such an article given to any one not belonging to the Department. Work-papers may not be shown to any official unconnected with the Railway Mail Service. Officers of the Railway Mail Service render themselves liable to dismissal If they make public any information which they receive officially or in the discharge of their duties. When information from Railway Mail Service records is asked for by any Government Officer, the matter should be referred to the Circle for orders. (Rule 5, Vol. VII)
